Chesney was born on Nov. 27, 2010. She came to us without a care in the world. She was a very quiet but very alert baby. She weighed in at 7lbs 12 oz & 19.5 in. long.
‘Tis true my form is something odd,
But blaming me is blaming God,
Could I create myself anew,
I would not fail in pleasing you,
If I could reach from pole to pole,
Or grasp the ocean with a span,
I would be measured by the soul,
the mind's the standard of the man.
ABS occurs when the fetus becomes entangled in fibrous string-like amniotic bands in the womb, restricting blood flow and affecting the babys development.
If a band wraps tightly around a limb, the limb can actually be completely amputated. If the band is across the babys face it can cause cleft palate. In a large number of cases the baby is also born with clubfeet. ABS is also the cause of numerous miscarriages, such as when a band becomes wrapped around the umbilical cord. ABS occurs randomly. Its not genetic, nor is it caused by anything a pregnant Mom did or didn’t do during pregnancy. Just because a person already has one child with ABS, that doesn’t make it any more likely that its going to affect a future pregnancy.
What Causes Amniotic Band Syndrome / ABS?
There are several theories as to the cause of Amniotic Band Syndrome / ABS. The most widely accepted is a rupture of the amnion occurring early in gestation. The fibrous bands of amnion that occur from the amniotic rupture encircle the limbs, resulting in tourniquet-like defects and intrauterine amputations. The timing of the rupture is believed to occur between 28 days after conception to 18 weeks of gestation. However, late bands can occur and present at birth with multiple abnormalities of the limbs, even after a normal sonogram was performed earlier in gestation.
Amniotic band syndrome is difficult to diagnose. Estimates of amniotic band syndrome / ABS incidence vary widely, from one in 1,200 to one in 15,000 live births.
Always remember everyone is different! Some more than others! As a friend once told me, If God made us all the same..we would be boring!
